Has it only been one year?

Could The Wandering Tortoise actually be celebrating just its first anniversary? I know it’s true, but it does seem hard to believe. Anyone that has been in the Wandering Tortoise know it is a special spot. Seeing that tap list when you walk in makes that clear, but it goes a lot deeper than that. The Tortoise is owned and operated by people that love beer and love providing a great place to enjoy beer. The owners, Justin and Shay, just get it. The Wandering Tortoise has been at the top of its game since opening because they have the experience and understanding of what it takes to make something special. They know it’s about the people. That’s clear with everyone they employ and every collaboration/partnership they bring into their shop. We all know that every business is dependent on making money, but some are different, some of these places are so genuine and driven to provide the best experience that sometimes they don’t seem to care. Is It me?

Recently, I was browsing the beer forums and blogs for the show and came across the an article, and like most good articles it made me question myself. Let me explain. In the article in question the author was at a bar and overheard a group of guys talking about the beer they were ordering. He agreed with most of the acronyms they were throwing around and I’m guessing most of the major descriptors as well. The only thing that really irked him was that they were saying how the IBU’s were low on the amber ales, the stouts, and even the IPA’s for christ’s sake!

Now the question I asked myself was “Am I one of those guys?” really? “Do I dislike a beer based on its relative IBU count?” And if I dig down deep and am truly honest with myself the answer is NO! Ok maybe I do. However, in most situations when I am at a new bar I look at the menu and choose a beer that they describe as one I might like. This is an IPA more than anything. If they have more than one of the same style and nothing between them is that different, than yes I might use IBU’s as a deciding factor. But. that is not the defacto reason I choose to drink a beer. Most of the time it is more of an after thought more that anything. I drink the craft beer (probably an IPA) and think to myself or out loud “What’s the IBU’s on this beast?” But, even if its below what in my amateur taste buds might assume that it should be I still do not feel it affects my overall assessment of the beer. The Setup

Standing in line is not one of my favorite things to do. And as I get older it takes a lot for me to even consider doing such a horrible thing. So it was pretty rare when Nate asked me to drive a few thousand miles and stand in line for a beer release, that I actually said yes. Especially given the fact that I have missed several local AZ Wilderness can releases which is practically down the road from me. But, after a long but fun road trip and night out at a few other breweries there I was. Standing in line, waiting for a beer. If you have never stood in a line for beer release, you should give it a try. Since you are randomly paired with those around you in line you do tend to start talking with other beer minded people and gleam some good info. One such thing was we should check out Phantom Carriage if we planned on heading toward Monkish. Continue reading
